In the WORD Wednesday ~ Fallin' Over

Yesterday morning I woke up to Josh whispering....

Josh: Rachie, the tree fell over.
Me (groggy): Huh?
Josh: The tree fell over onto the table.
Me: It did?
Josh: Did you tighten the screws enough?
Me: Obviously not. Did you pick it back up?
Josh: Of course.
Me: Thanks, honey.

Yes, my friends, our Christmas tree fell over during the night. Thankfully, at that time I had only put on the lights, not any ornaments! When we put the tree in the stand on Sunday, I obviously did not tighten the screws well enough.

Lousy foundation = Tree on your floor

In a way we are all a lot like that fallen Christmas tree.

As sinners, the only way we can stand tall is by having a firm foundation - our Savior Jesus. We foolishly think we're strong, but without our solid base, we wobble around....

Failing to trust in Him ~ “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5
Failing to give Him all the credit and glory ~ “Praise to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.” Psalm 72:18
Failing to love Him above all else ~ “'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind;'” Luke 10:27
Failing to love others ~ “’Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Luke 10:27
Failing to let His light shine ~ “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Mark 5:16
Failing to pray to Him continually ~ “Pray continually.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17

...and so on. Wobble, wobble. Fall.

We have zilch power to get back up again. Thankfully Jesus loves us dearly and picks us up off the ground. He "tightens the screws of the our base" through His Word and sacraments. Our faith in Him is strengthened.

We fall over countless times, but he's always there to catch us.

In Him, we stand tall. His light shining through us.

The other day I talked about preparing for our baby. More importantly, with the advent season upon us we prepare for the birth of the Savior! In all of the busyness, may we all keep our minds and hearts focused on the true meaning of Christmas.
