Our Story

**7/6/09 - If you are here from lovely Rachel's MM&M, welcome!! The following love story was posted a few months ago, but here it is again for your reading pleasure! Enjoy!**

Don't you just love a good love story?

I always enjoy hearing how couples got their start....

High school sweethearts? Friends first? Co-workers? Introduced by mutual friends? Enemies turned true loves?

I'm sure you've been wondering about
OUR story, so today you're in luck. ;-) Grab a cup of coffee and settle in to read how we got our start....

Josh and I met in college. I was a freshman, he was a sophomore. We were introduced early on as we both attended a very
small Christian college (which by the way, exists only to train future pastors and teachers) in the great state of Minnesota.

One January evening (the 25th to be exact) 3 of my girlfriends and I went to dinner and the movie
A Walk to Remember. When we arrived back on campus, a few of the sophomore guys we knew, including Josh, were going to a local casino. Being typical freshmen, we were not about to hesitate a fun invitation from older boys, so we hopped in the car and went. Josh and I started chatting and ended up sticking together once we got to the casino. I don't gamble, but had much more fun flirting anyway....after all, he was seriously cute.

Then I did something SO not me at all. I borrowed him money. I'm sure you're thinking that was a stupid thing to do, but I was confident he would pay me back. After all....let's remember that our school had less than a 1000 students. Everyone knew everyone. It would have been incredibly easy to shame him into paying up, need be.

A few days later Josh called and asked me to meet him outside my dorm (the school had a strict "closed dorm" policy - no boys in the girl's dorm, no girls in the boy's dorm except for certain hours on the weekend). Oh, man, talk about excitement! So I sprinted casually strolled out to see what he wanted and there he stood in the freezing winter air to hand me back the money I borrowed him.

The following Friday, Josh called wondering what I was up to. I had already made plans to go to the school's "Talent Show" night with my friend Bethany, but it quickly turned into a double date with her boyfriend Joel (who is now her husband......and we are all still dear friends) and Josh. The 4 of us went to the talent show and then watched a movie back at the dorm. Josh then asked if I wanted to go ice-skating.

Umm....obviously he did not realize at the time how much of a klutz I am, but I agreed. What was I going to say?
No? Yeah right. :-)

We got bundled up and headed over to the outdoor ice rink in town. He brought 2 pairs of skates. Luckily one of the pairs fit me ok (thanks Borch!) and we hit the ice. Man, was I horrible, but he held my hand (first time!) and guided me along. After we had our fill of skating, we made our way to the edge of the rink and he let go of my hand. Can you just guess what happened next?

I fell VERY HARD on my wrist. I then flopped gracefully slid onto my back and started to cry out in pain. I hurt SOOOO much. Poor Josh had to practically drag me to the car to get my skates off. He was very sweet and kept apologizing like it was
his fault or something.

To try to take my mind off of my throbbing arm, we got some hot chocolate...which Josh ended up spilling on his hand. Oh my, we were on a roll! So we both sat in pain while we sipped and chatted and laughed.

That was our first date. And it was wonderful - pain and all.

About 2 weeks later (February 12th) we celebrated my 19th birthday. After class I went to check my mailbox and was surprised to find a balloon and a note....

....from Josh inviting me to a surprise evening with him!

He picked me up at 10:15pm and immediately had me put on a blindfold. At that point in my life I had really never been surprised before, so I was so nervously excited! We drove around for a few minutes. Once we stopped, he held my hands and guided me through the snow to my "surprise". He took off the blindfold and there before me was......

a little romantic dinner for 2....Barbie decorations....and flowers ALL setup inside of an
ice shanty (that was sitting on the edge of the school parking lot)! Yes, I said an ice shanty. Romatic, ay?!

I was so speechless and touched and surprised that I cried.

After we enjoyed great food (thanks Andrew!) and yummy cake (thanks Katie!), Josh handed me a gift to open. What else would this boy give his new girl than a pair of wrist guards to protect her the next time she goes ice skating!

Needless to say, it was a fantastic birthday.

Whew...if you made it all the way to here, I applaud you! I could have added in so many more tidbits of
our story, but then you would never come back to read my blog again due to the boredom brought on by unnecessarily long posts.

So that's a bit of
our story.....it needed to be told in order to lead up to another tale I'll be sharing with you soon.

Now tell me dear friends, what is
your story? Fill free to fill my comment page or your own blog with romantic love stories that will surely bring dreamy sighs and awwws.

Because everyone loves a good love story.

  8. I am dying to know what school!?
Ok, do you realize that if I'd had my act together we could have gone to school together?
Remind me, is A Walk to Remember, the movie with Keanu Reeves, and he sells chocolate and pretends to be this girls husband cause she's pregnant and then they fall in love for real? That was good movie. Keanu is so cute. unless we're talking Speed then he is HOT.
Yeh, you lucked out with Josh, he sure is a cutie-patootie! I think I would have DIED if a cute guy like that wanted to even be in the same room with me, let alone surprise me with a Barbie birthday party! That is SO sweet, btw.

  9. what a great story!

My husband I met after college in the church singles class. He was finishing his master's degree and was sure he would have to move so didn't want to "take on" any relationships. We were "just friends' for about 8 months until we both decided there was more there. Our first date was to the lake with all our friends...one friend brought his small sailboat and we took it out. The water was a bit rough but as we got out in the middle, Steve leaned over to kiss me.....the boat dipped and I FELL OUT!!! with him sailing off....he tried to get the boat turned around so fast, he capsized it!!! We both made it to the boat and just held on to the bottom laughing!! I think that day sealed the deal for me!!! :)

  14. Oh, I love a good romantic story, and this certainly fits the bill! I love the ice skating part...so sweet.

When I first met my hubby, I attempted to be friendly - not even flirty, just friendly - and I got pretty much a grunt in response. Which totally didn't go over well with me, as you can imagine. :) Fortunately he came to his senses (ha!)but I still laugh about my first impression of him.
